You picked out the perfect hat, chose your colors, and waited excitedly for your custom embroidery to arrive. Now the real question: how do you keep it looking that good for years instead of months?
Custom embroidered hats are an investment — in your brand, your team, or your personal style. A little care goes a long way toward protecting that investment. Here's how to do it right.
1. Skip the Washing Machine
It's tempting to toss a dirty hat in with the laundry, but washing machines are hard on both the hat's structure and the embroidery threads. Agitation can fray stitching, and heat from the dryer can shrink the fabric or warp the brim.
Instead: Hand wash only when needed, using cool water and a mild soap.
2. Spot Clean First
Most hat "cleaning" is really just spot cleaning. Before you do anything more aggressive:
- Dab (don't rub) the stained area with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush
- Use a small amount of mild detergent mixed with cool water
- Work in small circular motions, focusing on the stain rather than the whole hat
- Rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue
This alone handles sweat stains, dirt, and most everyday grime without stressing the embroidery.
3. If You Must Hand Wash
For a deeper clean:
- Fill a sink or basin with cool water and a small amount of mild soap
- Submerge the hat and gently swish — no scrubbing directly on embroidered areas
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water
- Press out excess water with a towel; never wring or twist
4. Dry It the Right Way
Heat is the enemy of both fabric and thread color. After washing:
- Reshape the hat while damp, gently pushing the crown back into form
- Set it on a hat form, a bowl, or a clean towel-stuffed frame to dry
- Let it air dry away from direct sunlight and away from heat vents
- Never put it in the dryer — this is the fastest way to shrink or warp a hat
Give it 24–48 hours to fully dry before wearing again.
5. Protect the Embroidery Specifically
The embroidered logo or design is often the most delicate part of the hat:
- Avoid scrubbing directly over stitched areas
- Skip bleach and harsh chemical cleaners — they fade thread color fast
- Turn the hat inside out if you're treating a stain near embroidery, to clean from the back side when possible
6. Store It Smart
How you store a hat between wears matters more than people expect:
- Stack hats brim-up, or use a hat rack, to avoid crushing the crown
- Keep hats out of direct sunlight for long periods — UV rays fade both fabric and thread colors over time
- Avoid damp storage areas, which can lead to mildew or musty odors
7. Handle Sweat Stains Early
Sweat stains around the brim are the most common issue with regularly worn hats, and they're much easier to treat early:
- Wipe down the sweatband after heavy wear with a damp cloth
- Let the hat fully air out before storing it
- Treat any staining as soon as you notice it — set-in sweat stains are far harder to remove
The Bottom Line
Custom embroidered hats are built to last, but a little routine care keeps the colors bright, the stitching tight, and the shape sharp for years. Spot clean often, hand wash rarely, skip the dryer always, and your gear will keep representing your brand — or your crew — the way it should.
